Listening for Patterns

Listening for Patterns March 17, 2012

I spend time listening for patterns.

When I am working with people and organizations, my work generally begins with listening to appreciate the existing patterns of  relationship and expectation, the patterns of trust and responsibility, the patterns of anxiety and joy. I listen for patterns that people may not remember, but recognize as we sort through what is happening. Telling their stories helps people find the core values they share and explore deeper ways to move forward together.

When I bring a group of people together, I enjoy spending time listening to the patterns that emerge. Whether it is a Happy Hour with a Difference, part of my Quest for the Best Breakfast in Southern California, or a stop on a Craft Brewery Pilgrimage, I listen to people share parts of their stories and find the connections that create the pattern of each meet up. The patterns of sharing and listening help create the community that grows out of the time we spend together.

Even people who are not very interested in what I have to say are thirsty for someone to listen to them.

When I spend time in silence and solitude, I listen for patterns. Sometimes I listen for the patterns in myself, discerning the desires of my heart and becoming more acquainted with my true self.

I listen for the patterns of  the ways I am connected to the the Holy, to the Divine, to God. There is a depth and intimacy that I often need to seek in order to find. God is always with me, permeating the world and permeating my life. I am easily distracted, and need to take time to listen for the patterns of our connection. Those patterns create community, as well.

What patterns support your life? How do you listen for them?
