Great Books & Great Brews Group

Great Books & Great Brews Group November 24, 2012

There are very few things in life that I appreciate more than great books and great craft brews.

Books have shaped my entire life. Great books have inspired me and shown me new ways of experiencing the world. Books have taken me amazing places I have never visited and introduced me to fascinating people I have never met. I revel in how books are written; well-chosen words, carefully crafted paragraphs, insightful sentence structure. I enjoy reading, and sharing what I read with other people.

I have also gained a great deal from brewing. Craft brewers have given me insights into leadership, pilgrimage, and revelry. Craft brews have also taken me to new places and introduced me to new people. I revel in how beers are crafted; combining strong ingredients, patiently allowing the flavors and personality to emerge. I also enjoy sharing craft brews with other people.

Many of my closest friendships have grown around reading great books and crafting great brews.

Both reading great books and great craft brewing are also deeply embedded in monastic life.

Why not combine them?

I am facilitating a new group which will begin in January. We will read a book each month, then get together to talk about it at a place where we can also try some great craft brews. We will read a new book, and visit a new place, each month. Some of the initial months will focus on books I have already reviewed. I will share more specifics soon.

The group will meet physically in the San Gabriel Valley in Southern California, and there is no reason you cannot join us, in spirit and online. I am asking people in the physical group to commit to participating for at least six months.

I look forward to sharing great books and great brews with you.

What books would you recommend?
