Maybe it is because I was walking through the campus of CalTech, near the home of the Einstein Papers Project.

Physicists and healers, mystics and engineers: everyone tells us that everything is energy. Mass can be converted into energy and energy into mass. Energy makes life possible, and our bodies create energy. We are surrounded by fields of energy; kinetic energy, solar energy, calories of nutritional energy. We are filled with physical energy, intellectual energy, emotional energy, spiritual energy.

We consume energy by burning fuels that were created over millions of years. We plug in our iPads and iPhones to ensure that we do not run out of energy.

Energy constantly passes through our bodies. The earth, the universe, and each of us are held together by powerful energy networks.

We live our entire lives using a tiny sliver of the energy at our own disposal. We rely on a small fraction of our brains’ capacity. We protect ourselves from the potential pain and threats we perceive in emotional growth and spiritual depth. We shield ourselves from our own enormous energy.

We get in our own way. We discourage ourselves and refuse to recognize our own possibilites.

We allow the obstacles we perceive to distract us and diffuse our tremendous potential energy. We waste our energy, chasing things we do not actually want to gain.

We do not take care of ourselves. We do not renew our energy by strengthening our minds and bodies, our spirits and our hearts. We choose not to spend time resting and reflecting, allowing ourselves to remember our own values and goals.

We do not focus our energy. We are busy allowing our attention to be spent on what is not essential to us.

How do you focus your energies?

What could focusing our energy help us accomplish today?
