I am a focused person. Few obstacles will stop me from continuing to focus once I start working on something.

I may not know all the sources that feed my focus, or all the ways in which I practice focusing. I do know at least three steps that strengthen and sharpen the way I focus.

Understanding Why

My focus begins with the Why.

A good reason compels me to pay attention. A great reason can keep me going almost indefinitely.

My Why sparks my initial interest, and continues to draw me along. If a reason, or a question, is not important enough to capture my attention, I probably will not focus on it in the first place.

When I understand the reason why I am focusing, it gets my attention.

Recognizing What

Subjects matter. Some things interest me, some do not, and I focus on what interests me.

I am interested in more different questions now than I in the past, but some truths still apply. I am much more interested in words than in numbers. I pay more attention to people than almost anything else.

I am interested in history, stories, and books. I am more interested in mysteries than science fiction. How things work is more interesting to me than how they look.

I am more focused on the subjects that matter to me.

Appreciating Focus

I appreciate the beauty and elegance of focusing well. There is an energy that comes with strong focus that attracts me. I want to feel that again.

Focus also contains a spark of joy. I am much less able to focus on something for any length of time without it.

Being focused creates its own momentum.

How well do you understand your Why?

What feeds your focus?
