I believe that each of us has the potential to be a leader.

Each of us can do the work it takes to build essential leadership skills. Our leadership will not look the same as everyone else’s. Each of us will lead in unique ways.

There are at least three things that are essential to becoming the leader you can be.

Know who you are.

The first, most basic step toward leadership is knowing who you are. Leaders understand themselves well. They work past the masks and obstacles we each present. Consciously and unconsciously, we protect our true selves from the world.

You may have a position of responsibility or a significant paycheck. You are not a leader until you do the work to know yourself deeply and honestly.

Believe you can lead.

As you become better acquainted with your true self, you begin to recognize your own potential.

Leaders appreciate that leadership is not about meeting expectations, other people’s or your own. Leadership is about facing your fears and insecurities and not allowing them to control you. Leaders see the possibilities, even in themselves.

Leaders share their true selves with the people around them, which brings out the best in them. There are challenges and difficulties. You can lead your way through them.

Take the next step.

Leaders are not passive. Leadership is understanding that contemplation and action are two sides of the same coin. The deep work it takes to know yourself well and believe you are a leader sparks your acts of leadership.

The next step for you will not be the same as for other people. You bring your unique leadership gifts to bear.

How well do you know who you are?

Are you convinced you can lead?

Will you take the next step?
