Spiritual Life is Infinite and Intimate

Some people see spiritual life as enormous. They experience spiritual life as about absolute, universal truths. Even when they are cosmic and philosophical, spiritual life is more than that.

Spiritual life is all about deep truths that are beyond our ability to understand and describe. Spiritual life deals with the infinite, which is another concept we cannot truly grasp. Wherever we set a boundary or find an analogy, spiritual life is more.

What amazes me, and what can be difficult to remember, is that spiritual life is also intimate.

While spiritual life encompasses the most powerful energies at work in the universe, spiritual life is within us.

Many people who talk and write about spiritual life try to be as clear and systematic as they can. They want to explain complex ideas in terms the rest of us can appreciate. Their challenge is that spiritual life is beyond our understanding.

It is not a matter of how smart we are, or how articulate they are. The fact is, even after they do their best and we do ours, spiritual life is not something to be measured and analyzed. Spiritual life is not a system; spiritual life is a relationship.

Spiritual life is not a formula we are working to solve, nor a test we are trying to pass. Spiritual life is how the deepest, most significant power that exists embraces us and holds us in its arms. Spiritual life is spiritual.

Spiritual life goes beyond all the rules and all the ideas. Like two close friends sitting together to watch a sunset, spiritual life is more than words can say, and no more than we can hold in our hearts.

When was the spiritual life in you strongest this week?

When did the spiritual life in you face the greatest challenges this week, or this month?
