Margaret Feinberg is a strong woman, a fighter.

I first met Margaret a few years ago when I read one of her books, Scouting the Divine. She wrote about finding deep, sacred truth in everyday experience. She had read scripture texts about herding sheep, the sweetness of honey, new wine. She went looking for spiritual life from shepherds, bee keepers, and winemakers. Her deeper understanding helped open those Biblical stories in new ways.

From her strength, Margaret works to share her insight and understanding. She believes in the power of wonder and joy. Margaret overcomes the challenges of sharing the truth of her joy and wonder with the people around her.

A year and a half ago, Margaret learned that she was facing a new fight. She was diagnosed with breast cancer. My mother survived breast cancer; I have friends who have survived it. Cancer is more than a medical problem. We fight cancer with doctors and hospitals; it also takes deep joy to battle cancer.

Margaret’s newest book comes out of her fight, her strength. Fight Back With Joy describes her fight to overcome the pain and darkness of cancer with defiant joy.

Margaret, and the people who surround her with love, fight back with joy. This way of fighting inspires courage in others, spreading and strengthening the joy.

The joy Margaret writes about is strong and tough. It is joy that strikes back at the heart of discouragement and difficult challenges. It is joy that gives us laughter in the face of tears. It is joy that shows us how to be resilient.

We may, or may not, be fighting cancer. Everyone is fighting something. Margaret’s example, described in her own words, inspires us to Fight Back With Joy.

What is the biggest fight for you right now?

How will you fight back with joy this week?
