It can be a challenge to remember work does not have to make us miserable.

The times we struggle, the times we are frustrated, tend to stay with us longer than other experiences. We remember when we thought someone got in our way. When people encourage us or inspire us, it tends to wear off us more easily.

We may remember our fears more often than we remember the lessons we have learned. Our experiences can seem to pile up around us, slowing us down, holding us back.

Slowly, over time, our work can become a long, difficult ordeal. It feels like we continue working because we have to, not because we get to. It can be easy to forget why we set out in this direction in the first place.

The key for many people is taking a moment to remember. They get caught up in expectations and frustrations, challenges and anxieties. It is easy to forget. It can take work to remember.

It can be helpful to intentionally remember specific times someone has encouraged you. You might also want to reflect on times in the past when you have met challenges.

In addition, it helps to remember what motivates you. Take some time to breathe deeply and recognize what you value the most. It often does not take much time to help restore your perspective.

It is important for us to know what gives us joy. We need to remember why we are working, not only the work we still need to do. It can help to give your motivations a tangible image, like an icon on your computer.

We are working our way toward joy.

Where is your joy? How will you work toward joy today?

Why do you do the work you do?
