Making Life Work

We put a lot of time and attention into making life work for us.

Sometimes everything fits, all the pieces work together well. We see ourselves doing a good job. Nothing catches us by surprise, everything is balanced and complete. Our efforts are paying off, life is working well for us.

There are other times when life is like a puzzle we cannot solve. No matter how hard we try, there are extra pieces left over at the end. Just when we find a balance for work and family, education or physical health flies off into the distance. We are jugglers who cannot keep everything up in the air at the same time.

Just when we think we have everything working, life gets in the way.

There have been times when making life work felt like the most important thing for me to do. I approached life as a series of challenges I expected myself to solve. Life was like a chess match against a skilled opponent with everything at stake.

We work hard to learn from our past and to see as many moves ahead as we can.

There came a time when I began to see differently. It felt like waking up for the first time.

The lessons of the past and my concern about the future brought me to the present.

It dawned on me that there was more to life than what I had expected and experienced. Life was deeper and richer than what I had accomplished in it. Life was offering more to me than I had offered to life.

I conceded the chess match and set out on a voyage of discovery.

How well does your life work for you?

When are you able to live in the present moment?
