There may not be a “perfect job” for me. My experience includes lots of different kinds of work, in various jobs, for diverse organizations. I have done work, and worked for companies, I did not love. One person told me one of those experiences was “the perfect job, in hell,” and that was close to true.

There has been work I had to do, and now I do work I get to do. I love my work.

A few years ago I finished working for a nonprofit because I had accomplished what I set out to do. In the past, I would have polished my resume and started interviewing, looking for something tolerable to turn into what I thought I wanted. This time, I took a different path.

I had the opportunity to contemplate what work was drawing me to do it.

I identified the kind of work that needs me to do it. Now I am discovering whether the pieces fit together into a “real job.”

There are people I help and accompany as they explore spiritual depth in their lives. They may have come to the limits of the rules they learned as children, or they may need a caring listener.

There are people with whom I work to understand their own leadership and effectiveness. Some of them are people who have been told they are potential leaders. Some of them are people who have been told they need to strengthen their leadership.

There are groups of people I help remember and grapple with the values on which they were established. Some are companies, some are nonprofits. Each struggles to put their reasons for being into practice with integrity.

Where do you love working?

What is the work that is drawing you to do it?
