Every moment, every thought, every memory is full of life. Each one could change everything.

We fill our days with ways to avoid noticing. We worry, we regret, we become afraid, we get angry. It is as if we do not want to pay attention to the power of each experience. We spend our time skimming along the surface, intimidated by the life that fills everything.

We may not want to be overwhelmed by spiritual life. We hold onto feelings of control and security, and the objects that reinforce them for us. Spiritual life often reminds us there is so much more than we can control.

We focus ourselves on doing, achieving, accomplishing. We spend so much time and attention distracting ourselves from the deep sacred truths that fill our lives. It is as if we want to ignore the depths in us, in each other, in the universe around us. If we close our eyes and refuse to listen, maybe spiritual life will go away and leave us alone.

We can learn, with practice, how not to pay attention to spiritual life. That does not mean it goes away.

The fact we do not hear spiritual life or see it, taste it or smell its aroma, does not mean it does not fill us. We may run as fast as we can to escape spiritual life, but it is still there when we stop. We pause to take a few deep breaths and realize it fills our lungs. We take a moment to pay reflective attention and realize it fills our hearts. We look out over the Grand Canyon, or the skyline of a great city, and realize it is what we see.

What distracts you from full spiritual life?

How do you remind yourself of the fullness of spiritual life?
