Spiritual Life Lives Beneath the Surface

We do not grasp spiritual life at first sight. We cannot take spiritual life in with a quick glance, a quiet rustle, an initial sip.

Spiritual life needs to be savored and held on our tongues. We need to take time for our eyes and ears to adjust, for what is beneath the surface to register.

It takes time for people to talk honestly about spiritual life. We listen, looking into their eyes as they open their hearts. They begin on the surface, sharing facts, as they step forward thoughtfully into the depth.

It is a challenge to talk about spiritual life with words. We struggle to fill our stories with the depth and weight they deserve. Spiritual life is so often beyond our words and ideas. Filled with sacred truth, spiritual life draws us deeper beneath the surface as we listen.

We do not trust people who describe spiritual life as effortless joy. We know spiritual life is more than boxes on a checklist or exercises in a workbook. Spiritual life is real life. It draws us deeper.

Spiritual life draws us into reflection. We sit, rocking and looking beneath the surface. Beneath the surface of the water, beneath the surface of people, we listen for truth. We want to smell the aroma of spiritual life, taste its flavors, feel its warmth on our arms and faces.

Spiritual life fills us and the world around us. It draws us into our deepest selves, and into the sacred depth in the world and people around us.

Spiritual life lives deeply beneath the surface, and we must go beneath the surface to find it.

Where beneath the surface will you seek spiritual life today?

How will you taste the deep truth of spiritual life this week?
