Spiritual Life is Not Summer Vacation

There are times when we begin to think that spiritual life is like summer vacation.

We want to get away, do something different, enjoy an experience the kids will remember. We can plan and get organized to do something when work is not so busy. Maybe we can go to the mountains or the beach, to the woods or somewhere else special. We will get away from the pressures of everyday life and get some rest.

It is important for us to find rest, and to create meaningful memories with people we love. We like to think spiritual life is about taking retreats and catching our breath. We see ourselves in a hammock swaying in the breeze, reading an entertaining book.

Spiritual life is not really a vacation for me.

Spiritual life is very powerful and offers resources beyond what we understand. It often takes time and hard work for me to be willing to open myself to that energy. I tend to try to rely on what I can figure out, forgetting the potential of spiritual life. Spiritual life often waits for me until I am ready to let go.

Spiritual life is not about getting away and relaxing. It is not a special occasion for which I plan and save. Spiritual life changes the way I look at the world every day, and the people around me. It helps me recognize the deeper truths in myself that have eluded me in the past. Spiritual life is more about waking up and seeing in new ways than about sleeping in.

Spiritual life is not time off we take to escape from the pressures of the world. Spiritual life is about coming home.

How is spiritual life shaping you this summer?

Where is spiritual life taking you?
