Summer is rapidly coming to an end. Some schools have already started again for the “fall.” Many of us share the feeling that summer was just too short this year, over far too quickly.

It is easy to understand if there are goals and projects we set for the summer that did not get completed. Some of us tend to have the same aspirations each summer, but never seem to accomplish them.

Some of us have the misfortune of actually starting work, but running out of time or energy. What seemed so reasonable on Memorial Day may still be waiting for us on Labor Day.

The most frustrating summer projects for me usually involve some form of renovation. The plan looks so straightforward on paper, the changes so beneficial. It is as we work on the specifics of the project that the details begin to overwhelm us. Everything we want to do needs to fit together at the right time, in each place. What seemed so clear on paper becomes overwhelming in practice.

We can have a very similar experience when we try to renovate our own leadership. We know we would like to make something outdated or insecure more contemporary. We hope to convert an eyesore into something that meets our needs today. We put together a workable plan, and hope to have everything done this summer.

As we work, our carefully crafted plans fly into dozens of pieces.

We could probably use the help of someone familiar with the potential challenges. We may have a clear picture of what we would like to build, but need assistance making that picture real.

Where are you working to renovate your leadership this summer?

How has your leadership renovation plan taken on a life of its own?
