We are living in a fantasy world.

Our lives are far beyond the greatest fantasies our grandparents could imagine. The wildest dreams of science fiction have become common, everyday appliances. Our careers may be limited only by our own imaginations.

Many of us spend more time participating in fantasy sports than playing real sports.

We have come to believe our fantasies are real, that our world conforms to our fantasies.

Spiritual life can become a fantasy into which we disappear, leaving our cares behind. Our spiritual lives are filled with epic tales of mighty heroes, powerful women, dangerous challenges. We understand our spiritual journeys to be like the dramatic tales of legends and myths. In our fantasies we slay dragons, defeat sinister enemies, overcome obstacles to save the day.

Spiritual life, though, is not a fantasy.

Each of us takes a spiritual journey which includes challenges and difficulties. It is not our task to win these battles through our own strength and skill. Our spiritual journey is more grueling than that.

Spiritual life fills us, drawing us ever closer and enfolding us in sacred love.

We may fantasize about great ordeals and performing feats of strength. Our most significant struggles are not against enemies or opponents, but within ourselves.

The deep truths of spiritual life call us to awaken to our true selves. Spiritual life is about casting aside our illusions and fantasies we have constructed to see ourselves clearly.

We may fantasize about intense pleasure, fame, or fortune. Spiritual life shows us our truth.

In our fantasies, our minds distract us from the reality of the world. Spiritual life is about the deepest desires of our hearts becoming real.

What are your spiritual life fantasies?

How do our fantasies reveal the deepest desires of our hearts?
