Spiritual Life is About Freedom

There are people who think spiritual life is about holding on as tight as possible.

Some people believe we need to hold onto truth as strongly as we can. For them, truth is elusive and likely to escape if we do not contain or control it. They need to know clearly and concretely which truths are theirs and which truths are not. It is important to them to understand what is right and what is not.

Some people find a specific piece of truth and grasp it as tightly as they can for as long as they can. Truth is valuable to them. They do not want to lose it. They find a truth they can believe and anchor their lives on it. Their truth holds them in the right place.

For me, spiritual life is more about letting go than about holding on tightly.

My understanding of spiritual life has more to do with being open than with being anchored. When we are holding on with both hands, it is hard for us to receive anything new.

It may come down to how we each experience the depth of sacred spiritual life around us.

We may see spiritual life as like a test we must pass or a hurdle we must overcome. We may want to hold onto every drop of spiritual life we earn through our own effort.

Or we may see spiritual life as overwhelmingly abundant and generous. Holding onto the Sacred will only hold us back from recognizing and appreciating more.

If each moment surrounds us with a wealth of spiritual life, we are free to let go and soar.

How does spiritual life set you free?

When have you glimpsed the vast riches of spiritual life all around you, and within you?
