Spiritual life is more than a feeling, more than an idea, more than how we see the world.

We do more than experience spiritual life. We put spiritual life into practice.

Our spiritual practices do not make us better people, more deserving of love. We do not practice spiritual life to earn rewards or punishments. We practice spiritual life to try to see what we could only yet imagine.

We practice spiritual life to find intimate connections to deep, immense truths.

When I was growing up, my attention was captivated by the night sky. I could stand outside for hours watching the stars and the dark space between them. They were right there, all around me. They were so far away, so powerful, so overwhelming. The stars helped me appreciate how small my concerns must appear to them.

The night sky helped me put my fears into perspective.

Now I live where it is difficult to see stars at night, where it is easy to lose perspective.

We practice spiritual life to help us remember. We find actions, or they find us, to make those lessons real to us again. We need to be reminded what our challenges look like to the stars, even when we cannot see them.

We practice spiritual life in intimate ways that open us to its immensity. We try something new, learn a lesson, and put it into practice. Spiritual life is so far away, so boundless, and so much a part of us.

It may not be the stars in the night sky. We find tangible steps we can take to make an intimate connection to the immensity of life.

What reminds us to put our fears into perspective?

How are we intimately connected to the immensity of spiritual life today?
