Exploring Strange New Worlds

Exploring Strange New Worlds June 18, 2016

I have been captivated by heavenly lights in the night sky for as long as I can remember. My fascination was encouraged by an uncle who was a NASA engineer. I was awakened to even greater possibilities by a television show. It presented the stars as the “final frontier” and the chance to “explore strange new worlds.”

While I have never left the earth’s atmosphere or gravitation, I still love the idea of exploring. Space is not the only frontier left to explore.

Some of us have found space to explore here on our home planet. Some of us find ways to explore standing still, or sitting down. Some of us explore the sacred spaces within ourselves.

The quest that lights my imagination, sets my heart on fire, is exploring our true selves. So many of us have hidden ourselves from ourselves. Even before we knew we were afraid, we constructed ways to protect ourselves. Before we could make conscious decisions, we built elaborate personal defenses. We explore the familiar ways we try to keep ourselves safe. We explore the assumptions and expectations that hold us down.

It is our spiritual practice to explore, to push boundaries, to try new things. We act each day to free what is constrained within us, to release our own truth. Each time we are faced with a challenge or a boundary, we choose to practice exploring.

Each of us is on a journey of exploration and discovery. We are inspired by those who have gone before us. We chart our own paths.

Our frontiers are not in distant galaxies. We do not require starships or transporter technology to explore new worlds. We explore worlds within ourselves.

Where will you find new life this week?

How will you practice exploration today?
