Building on Yesterday

It is unlikely we will achieve perfection today.

Today is only one day. We may experience things today as a result of months, or years, of effort. We may begin work today on projects that last the rest of our lives.

We may feel more satisfied, or hopeful, or secure today. We may, though, feel more discouraged, or sad, or overwhelmed today. The way we feel today does not determine how we will feel tomorrow, or how we felt yesterday.

It does not make much sense for us to try to spend today without making any mistakes. If we attained perfection today, what would we do tomorrow?

It is not the point of today to arrive at perfection. Even if we think we become perfection today, we will see it differently when we remember it. There is much more benefit for us in learning, growing, deepening each day. The point of each day is to build on where we were yesterday.

Our understanding of our purpose shapes the ways we approach the work we do each day. Our work, our lives, are not checklists of things to be done perfectly. We are exploring, seeking the deeper truths on which we can build tomorrow. Each day gives us opportunities to build on what we have done before.

Some people view the work they do as overcoming challenges. If we are pursuing perfection, we might see ourselves as surrounded by obstacles. If we are building on yesterday, the work we do is the raw material for our construction. Our work is filled with lessons to learn, opportunities for growth, ways to become deeper.

We are building on yesterday, laying the foundation for tomorrow.

How are you building today on what you learned yesterday?

What will you gain today what you can build on tomorrow?
